Statements by Ron Paul on the Alan Colmes Show about Donald Trump
According to Ron Paul, Donald Trump is a “dangerous person,” and an “authoritarian”.
He went on to say that, “I think he’s is a dangerous person. And a lot of people find him sort of funny, and love him, even libertarian types.” But added, “He's almost the opposite of a libertarian”.
He also said, "People listen to him, and believe he may be raising white horses someplace and he’s going to ride in. Because he is almost the opposite of a libertarian, because it’s not like ‘I want to give you your freedom and your liberty to run your life as you choose. Your civil liberties are absolutely yours, you can’t hurt anybody, it’s your own money you can spend it any way you want.’ But he sounds like the person: ‘I know the answers and I’m going to do this and I’ve done this, I’ve done this, this and this.’"
Paul mused, “He’s so disruptive to the party system, and I enjoy that too, but I think he’s a man that if conditions deteriorate — which they can, see I work on the assumption that the world is no more stable than Greece, and if those conditions come — people want to be told what to do.”
He went on to say, “I think Trump is an authoritarian and he brags about it. ‘I’m the boss and I tell people what to do.’ Government happens to be a little different to that. The only thing you want to do if you believe in the market place is you want to get rid of the government. But he’s talking about having strong taxes on imports. He wants to punish people and he’s the boss. So I think he would be dangerous to the economy.”
He further explained, “He says ‘I’m going to bring jobs back’ but you don't do that with protectionism. Protectionism makes things worse. So yeah, he is getting a lot of attention right now but he is a authoritarian. He wants to run people lives and run the world and run the economy because that is the way he lives his live. And on occasion he comes up with a correct idea, but an authoritarian is the opposite of a libertarian. A libertarian wants to release creative energy to the individuals. We want to get government out of our lives, out of the economy, and out of all these places around the world. So it’s quite a bit different to the way a authoritarian would approach our problems.”
